It is with a deep sense of regret that we relay the passing of our dear friend and club member Dick O Brien.
Mechanic, car builder, rally driver, service man, racer, navigator, organiser, mentor, scrutineer, marshal are just some of the terms that could be used to describe Dick. With an involvement in motorsport that stretched over 60 years, his love for almost anything on four wheels was easy to see. A founding member of Cork Motor Club, Dick was to be found at every event whether it be a test trial, night nav, single stage or West Cork Rally – he liked nothing more than getting stuck in at marshalling, scrutineering or just being general dogsbody. He was a friend and mentor to many a competitor, driver or navigator, and all benefitted from his wisdom, experience and willingness to help.
His involvement with the Munster Vintage Motor Cycle & Car Club saw him continue to use his excellent skills and whether it be organising events, drawing up event documentation, marshalling, chairing meetings and he was always eager to be part of the proceedings whether as Chairman, Director or member. His enthusiasm was infectious, his amazing stories were legendary, his willingness to help second to none while his front room was the pre event office for so many events. But, above all, Dick was a good friend to us and will be greatly missed.
To his wife Catherine, sons Matt & Tom, daughters Anne & Helen, daughter & sons in law, grandchildren, his relatives and many, many friends may we offer our sincere condolences to you all. Rest in peace, Dick.
